Pretty is practical. It is the visual sum of order and balance. We are attracted to it and inspired by it. But good design does not start with pretty. Good design, whether that is furniture, websites, animation, packaging or architecture doesn’t separate the surface appearance from the whole design process. A good design starts with good questions, it learns its audience, spends a lot of time in the basic functionality and threads seamlessly the pretty into the whole process. So, we can slap some makeup on to try and get pretty, but that’s not really pretty – that’s just ugly with a cheap paint job.
